Never Too Old

Kids in a mud pit attempting to make bricks and pottery based on knowledge they learned from YouTube videos.

These movers and shakers don’t need the next best things, just grass and dirt. They were the needed company to already curious filled children.

As parents, we are to teach and guide our kids in the paths they are to go.

As parents, we must learn when to put off all the things they must do to enjoy life – to simply be kids in the moment.

Staying a little longer and hold onto them a little tighter as the littles in our lives before they grow up too fast. It is not an if, more so, they will grow up and grow wings flying into their own direction of life with the tools we’ve given them.

Time is not something that can be turned back. Time will forever keep on moving forward. As each day goes by our little ones only grows older by the moments. While in those moments allow them as many possibilities to be the children they are meant to be. To be the child that sees the world through a water globe lens. To be the teenagers who's supposed to do their jobs best – be a teenager. These are the moments we can bless our little ones to reflect upon when they flourish into a world that is constantly growing and growing.

Because one day we will look back and tell ourselves, “If only I have known… I would have enjoyed it a little longer and hold on a little tighter.”

Little one made a waterfilled diorama terrarium inside a fast-food cup while at the beach.

Growing up, maturing, and holding responsibilities is something nobody in this world can escape so until then let them be kids. They are never too old to be your mud-covered children.

How do this look like? Below are some ideas:

  • Let them be bored. A child’s imagination and creativity never cease to amaze.

  • In a digital world sit with them and enjoy the contents or videogames they are enjoying. This is a good opportunity for conversation starters – focus more on getting to know them and truly listening versus seeing this as an opportunity for life lessons applications.

  • Bring out the basics. Color, draw, create, and build with them. Let them be the leader and you be their interning assistant.

  • Plan playdates with their friends and let them play without electronics.

Growing up does not mean giving up. We give these opportunities to our children so they can grow up to be their own best versions of themselves. In a world where everything tells how one should be this allows them the ability to just be who they are supposed to be. As parents and caregivers this is a gift given to our little ones towards raising healthy healed children that walks in the right directions. Everyone grows up with their own struggles, but this helps lessen one thing while journeying in their adult world. It is our job to allow them to simply be in a world where they will grow up into that’s constantly telling them how they should be.

We do not know their goings, but we can surely help shape their steps.
